The Miracle of Birth; My Memoirs on Elijah Brooks

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you and before you were born I consecrated you…” – Jeremiah 1:5

On Monday, January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court made a decision to legalize the murderous act of abortion. And since that careless judicial brushstroke, our nation’s portrait has been smeared with the blood of unborn children. This week my son Elijah celebrated his fifth birthday.  With the beauty of my son upon my mind this week, I want to share with you my personal journal entry from May 27th 2009.  In it, I address the miracle of birth along with the darkness of abortion.

“Today at 6:21 in the morning, my son Elijah Brooks Martin was brought into this world.  He was born weighing in at 8 pounds 12 ounces, and his length was 20 1/2 inches.  He must have received his height from the Armstrong’s side of the family and not the Martin’s! Speaking as a father, and I may be a little partial, but he is a pretty good looking fellow.  One of the first things that I did after his delivery was count all of his fingers and his toes just to make sure that they were all there.  His toes and fingers are so small, but yet have such detail.  Simply looking at him causes me to ponder on how God the Father, the all-powerful Creator, is truly the God of detail!  I do not understand how anyone could be an atheist, especially after observing the birthing process earlier this morning. Furthermore, I also do not understand how anyone could be a supporter of abortion; to think that the law of the land allows full term abortions. The act of abortion is inconceivable for me to even fathom.  I cannot wrap my brain around it, especially after seeing Elijah’s physical structure and fully developed body that I saw today. Jeremiah was known as “the weeping prophet” of the Old Testament. In chapter one, the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the beautiful words above. Notice how personal, intimate, and direct the words of God are to Jeremiah. Life begins at conception. God is the designer and creator of life and He reminds the prophet Jeremiah that He has known Jeremiah even before he was conceived! God is Jehovah Meckadesh; that is He sanctifies us or consecrates us. God wanted the prophet Jeremiah to ponder upon this fact.  Notice the last part of our text. It says, “Before you came forth out of the womb I consecrated you.” The word consecrated means “to be set apart” or “to be made holy.” God had created Jeremiah for a purpose and God certainly had a plan for Jeremiah’s life. This same truth applies to you too. Just like Jeremiah, the Lord knew you before you were conceived. Furthermore, He also has great and wonderful plans for your life. What are His plans for you? He wants you to be consecrated and set apart for His glory, similar to the plans that He had for the prophet Jeremiah. This afternoon, a couple in the Grace family came by the hospital and prayed for Elijah. In this gentleman’s prayer, he prayed that my Elijah would live a life that would reflect the life of the Old Testament prophet named Elijah. What a prayer! The prophet Elijah was just like the prophet Jeremiah; they were both set apart in service to God.  I pray that my little baby boy Elijah will be set apart for God’s glory. I pray that God would use him a mighty way to impact those around him for kingdom purposes.”

Through this time of reflection, I pray that you grow closer and deeper to the One who knitted you together, and formed you! Take time out today and reflect upon these thoughts that I have shared with you about one of the most special days of my life. Consider how our great and mighty God is the God of detail. Consider how intimately the Lord was involved in your making. He has created you, and has done so with the sole purpose of setting you apart for His glory.  And may these thoughts about the miracle of birth help us all see the plethora of atrocities that have been birthed into our culture through the legalization of abortion.
